Keller on clues for God

Off and on, for like a year now, I’ve been reading The Reason For God, by Tim Keller, pastor of Redeemer Church in New York.

I’ve read lots of ‘apologetic’ books over the years, and chewing up the meat and spitting out the bones, I learned a lot form those books. But they tend to all say the same thing, so without some prodding, I never would have picked up Keller’s book. However, after reading so many good things about it on various blogs and articles, I decided to pick it up, and man, am I glad I did.

The Reason For God is incredibly smart, well-written, humble, clear, and focused on the present American culture. It’s full of specific responses to guys like Richard Dawkins and William Dennett.

Not only that, he has a lot to say that I don’t really think anyone else is saying.

Kingdom : God Reigns

A while back, Mars Hill church did a series called ‘Doctrine‘. The series is 12 or 13 parts, and is designed to give new or young believers an overview of the major foundational beliefs of the Christian faith.

The last teaching in the series is called, “Kingdom: God Reigns“. In it, pastor Mark Driscoll teaches the entire book of Revelation in about an hour and 20 minutes.

On my way to work this morning, I listened to this teaching

…for the fourth time.

It’s that good

That powerful

That important

Suffering

Here’s a terrific post from Scott Knight at TheResurgence casting some perspective on suffering.

This is from a pastor who is training to be an amateur ultimate fighter!

It starts like this:

As I write this blog, my body aches from the effects of training at a fight club with men who are much younger than I am. One of my toes is sprained, I think I broke my thumb, I have bruises on my face (which my wife is not fond of), and I tore a chunk of flesh completely off my big toe. None of these are injuries that would keep me from training, but they are very inconvenient and annoying! I made a comment about my aches and pains to one of the professional fighters after practice and he had a very interesting response. It was a bit unexpected, but it made me think. He said:

“There is an easy way to end your suffering: just stop training.”

As he walked away, he threw in, “See ya next Monday!” He knew that I am not about to stop because my goal is not to be pain-free. My goal is to be in shape and improving as a competitor. But his comments have caused me to think about suffering, so I want to share with you some training principles about suffering that you can apply to your life as a follower of Christ.

“In God We Do Not Trust”

Check out this insightful blog post by Mark Driscoll about the recent election. I feel like he summarizes some things that I noticed as well. Here’s a snippet:

First, people are longing for a savior who will atone for their sins. In this election, people thirst for a savior who will atone for their economic sins of buying things they did not need with money they did not have. The result is a mountain of credit debt they cannot pay and a desperate yearning that somehow a new president will save them from economic hell.

Second, people are longing for a king who will keep them safe from terror in his kingdom…
